Socket Design and Fit

The socket is the most important part of your prosthetic. It is extremely important that your socket fits perfectly in order to walk well, run, and go on with your life. If your socket is bad, nothing will feel right. You also may end up with sores that may take days to heal.

There are different ways to make a socket. One way is casting and another way is using a laser. Iʼve described tje laser technique in more detail on this page. One method is not necessarily better than the other. But no matter what approach your prosthetist chooses make sure he or she lets you stand on it (without a foot) and have him/her keep adjusting it until you feel nothing.

Once your leg is complete, you will walk out with whatʼs called a “check socket”. Check sockets are put together temporarily so you can try the fit. Donʼt go too quickly from your check socket to the finished product. The check socket is made from plastic material thatʼs easily adjusted. Once you go to the final socket itʼs difficult, almost impossible, to make adjustments. Take your time and make sure it feels right!

Iʼve put together an overview of how a socket is made. This socket was made using Hangerʼs Insignia system.

1story1world: I asked to be allowed to return to school. I can be very persuasive! I started with a limited schedule, built around my medication needs.
