My Prosthetics Company - Hanger Prosthetics & Orthotics

The company that makes my prosthetics is Hanger Prosthetics & Orthotics. There are many things I love about Hanger but here are few that I feel are important:

1. Corporate obligations and responsibility - Hanger is a large corporation and while this seems like a bad thing, it's really actually very good. As a large corporation they can't 'fly under the radar' with unacceptable activities.

2. Access - Hanger has many offices across the country and all staff go through the same training program. When I am traveling it doesn't matter where I am, if I have an issue, I can contact the nearest Hanger office, arrange for them to see me and correct the issue as soon as possible. Because they are all connected, the new prosthetist will have all of my information and will usually reach out to my local prosthetist to understand me and my needs. After services have been performed, my local prosthetist is updated with the work that was done.

3. Technological Advances - The Orthotics and Prosthetics (O&P) field in general is always technologically lagging. If you are dealing with smaller O & P practices they are just not capable of having the access to the latest technology and they cannot support research and development like large corporations. The money is just not there. When I am dealing with Hanger I know that they will have the latest and greatest technology available.

My Legs

Unlike your body which regenerates while you sleep, your prosthetic legs don't regenerate themselves. They deteriorate with use, 24/7. This is just one of the reasons it's nice to have more then one leg. If you have one leg, and it malfunctions or breaks, your mobility is compromised until it can be fixed.

I am fortunate enough to be able to have 4 legs, which helps a great deal. It took years to get to the point where I can have 4 legs! It was combination of having enough money and reusing some of the old legs and systems to help me afford and get to where I can have the legs I need.

Most people can't appreciate the fact that when your leg breaks you are stuck. It's worse than having your car break --- it usually means you can't do anything for yourself. Talk to your prosthetist and find out if he or she can help you get to more than one leg.

It's nice to have a water leg you can use for a shower or swimming pool and avoid hopping and slipping in the shower, or having to dry your leg on the couch after. It's also really nice to have a back up leg if something goes wrong.

The four legs I have are:
Everyday Leg
Water Leg
Pretty Leg
Backup Leg
